As your body heals after an injury or surgery, scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is fibrotic and less mobile then pre-injury/surgery. Adhesions may form, sticking together layers under the skin.
A method of non-invasive physical therapy developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions. Using specialist scar massage and fascial release, therapy tools and self-care advice to promote healthy recovery.
Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We understand if you want to make a positive change to your scar as soon as possible, to help with pain and tightness or for cosmetic reasons. However an immature scar must be 8 weeks post injury/op with no open wounds, no bleeding, scabs or oozing, or bruising around it and be discharged from your medical professional/consultant. You can have scar therapy before this point, but written consent from your lead consultant or doctor is required before treatment (Please contact us for the specific form we need to obtain).
Keloid scars occur when he body lays down more scar tissue than is needed to repair the injury site, leading to a scar that continues to grow after the wound has healed. Scar therapy can work to help reduce the sensations felt elsewhere in the body such as tightening and restriction. We can work near the scar and on the scar with gentle techniques but we will not stimulate the scar too much to avoid encouraging more scar tissue. All scars can be worked on!
Firstly a thorough consultation is taken and details of medical history. We will talk about your relationship with your scar - can you look at it/touch it? Does it cause a lot of emotional distress or not at all? We'll assess your sensation or lack of it around your scar and body. Feel for ridges or adhesions deep down and assess how it affects the rest of your body.
Scar therapy isn't a firm technique, we influence the connective tissues called fascia. This sits below your skin but above your muscle, so it won't be a firm or uncomfortable feeling. Most people think that because they are numb or that scar tissue is harder than other tissues then firm pressure is needed when they themselves massage or have someone else treat them. This couldn't be further from the truth and all our examples of scar therapy have come about with this lighter touch.
After your scar therapy we will talk through a treatment plan and advise on any products to use to help your scar soften - all products we sell at ST Sports and Wellbeing are medical grade and used within the NHS or have had clinical medical trials to prove their effectiveness. For severe scars some products can be prescribed by your GP. We will also give you guidance on self scar massage to further help your scar.
No, we can't make your scar disappear. Results vary on each individual, early treatment often proves the best results within the first 2 years of the scar being formed. But old scars are never to old to be worked on!
This varies on the age of the scar, the length and depth of the scar and varies from each individual. Normally a course of treatment is beneficial but a one off session with some at home advice can also work wonders. Most clients with new scars have a course of 3-4 sessions every 2-4 weeks after they are 8 weeks post op/injury and then one off treatments at 6months/12months/18months/24months post surgery. With a revisit after 24 months only if necessary. Those with older scars may need 4-6 sessions at 2-4 weekly intervals and then a revisit every 6-12 months if necessary.
You may immediately notice changes, or you may notice a few days after treatment. But sometimes it takes a few sessions to see a significant change. You should feel restrictions and tightness in your scar tissue release quicker than your scar's outward appearance.
You may feel a little uncomfortable, or not feel any discomfort at all. Some clients feel a sharp 'lightning' pain in the 48hours after treatment that is over in a flash, this is due to the stimulation of nerve ending repair.
Scars can link to certain traumatic events, and sometimes it can stimulate intense emotions, especially if you or others are usually unable to touch your scar. This is all a part of your healing journey and please do not be ashamed to reach out and ask for help and support if your scar is affecting your mental health.
RESTORE scar therapy has been developed to stimulate the bodies natural healing processes, in order to create changes in scar tissue. This will usually leave you feeling relaxed and may give a sensation of lightness and mobility at the end of the appointment. Some people feel tired. Just listen to your body in terms of post-treatment activity.
The RESTORE method has been developed by the UK's leading scar therapy teacher and Harley Street scar specialist, Emma Holly. RESTORE scar therapy method is used within the NHS and leading private healthcare providers.
